Description

  • The workshop is a hands-on, fast-paced experience designed to teach researchers the tools of mass spectrometry and proteomics, in order that they might understand and best use these tools. One does not need to be an OSU student in order to take the workshop, because it's not a course.
  • I will run the workshop for 5 days in a row, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 and 1:00 p.m.-5:30 p.m. on MTWThF.  You should only register for one of the two sessions. There are only 8 seats per workshop session, and they will fill up quickly, so don't delay on putting your name on the waiting list.
  • Because students are often interested in having their workshop credentials appear on their transcripts, students can also earn one hour of OSU graduate credit "BIOC 6820 Mass Spec/Proteomics." It is not possible to take the mass spectrometry/proteomics "course" without taking the "workshop," but workshop participants are not required to enroll in the formal coursework. For the optional companion graduate course, students will be graded on the basis of a final exam, attendance of all lectures, and completion of all exercises. I do not anticipate using a grading curve. A syllabus will be available on the first day of workshop, and I'll hand out the enrollment permission slips at that time. It is not possible to enroll early. Earned course credit will appear on the Fall transcript, because that is when we'll take the exam. Because I and the instruments are only available during the workshop week, students should read the syllabus guidelines closely before enrolling in the course:  there are almost no opportunities to make up missed workshop exercises without incurring an "I" on your transcript.
  • Unfortunately, the bursar always wants to be paid for course credits, thus students who wish to earn the optional graduate course credit must also pay the bursar for one credit hour, as per standard bursar credit hour policies. Please note that neither Ag Conferences, the Facility, nor I are supported by enrollment fees that you pay to the Bursar. Hence, the "workshop" and "course" are separate, with separate fees. While this is regrettable, students may find some solace by telling themselves that the workshop registration fee is equivalent to a lab consumables fee, and that typical MS training courses cost $5,000.
  • The most common question I get is: "can I take 'BIOC 6820 Mass Spec/Proteomics' without taking the workshop."  To be clear: "sorry, no."
