Environmental Quality and Waste Management at OSU

Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resources

Background

The impact of alternative production practices and conservation tillage on water quality is a concern because the public often perceives that production of "organic" crops implies improvement in environmental quality.  However, such practices have many side-effects that require attention.  Clear examples exist in the use of poultry manure as fertilizer in organic vegetable production, where phosphorus build-up in soils can negatively impact water quality.  Conservation tillage also has potential positive and negative effects that should be addressed through additional research and extension programs.
