Environmental Quality and Waste Management at OSU

Nutrient Management

Background

In Eastern Oklahoma and other areas of the state there has been a substantial buildup of P in the soil where manure has been used extensively as fertilizer for pasture, grain, vegetable, or horticultural crops.  Excessively high P can make soils potential pollution sources for area lakes and rivers.  Crops and cropping systems to mine P from high P-soils and alternative management may reduce the impact of these soils on water quality.  However, much is still unknown about the Phosphorus cycle, and both research and extension are needed to develop improved management practices and management decision tools.  The PPM Calculator is one such tool, developed in order to assist decisions that could benefit crop production and water quality concurrently.
