We had a very successful training session on "Designing and Specifying Pervious Concrete at the OSU Botanical Gardens on April 21 and 28.  The training included a two-part webinar from the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association and hands-on training on mixing, pouring, and testing pervious concrete blocks that we made at the training.  Below is a more specific agenda and description of the activities.

See more pictures from the training at our Facebook page (click to view).

Background Info

Architects and engineers earned two Professional Development Hour upon completion of this program. This seminar was registered with the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Systems.

Wednesday, April 21

8:45-9:00         Registration

9:00-10:00      Webinar from the National Ready-Mixed Concrete Association titled "Designing and Specifying Pervious Concrete" (Part I)

10:00-12:00   Hands-on training

Wednesday, April 28

9:00-10:00    Webinar from the National Ready-Mixed Concrete Association titled "Designing and Specifying Pervious Concrete" (Part II)

10:00-12:00   Hands-on training and tour of permeable paver site at the OSU Botanical Gardens

Webinar Description:

This two-part Webinar provides an overview on implementing pervious concrete pavements as a solution to reducing stormwater runoff from building sites and other paved areas. Participants will learn about pervious concrete pavement systems, engineering properties and construction techniques. Part 1 discusses hydrologic and structural design of pervious concrete pavements. Part 2 addresses the specifics that every specifier should consider when drafting pervious concrete specifications, with a focus on American Concrete Institute (ACI) Committee 522 Guide to Specification for Pervious Concrete.

This Webinar will help civil engineers, architects, landscape architects and public works officials understand the principles behind pervious concrete design. Contractors, product suppliers and land developers will also benefit from this Webinar.  The biography of the webinar presenter is here.

Hands-on Workshop Description:

During the first day we will break into teams and mix and pour a one ft2 square of pervious concrete using different aggregate sizes.  On the second day (one week later), we will test the squares to see how each team did on their mix and how much water can pass through pervious concrete with different sized aggregates.  Participants will also get a chance to view and hear about the permeable paver installation at the Botanical Gardens.
