Research Overview

The memorandum of agreement between the Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resource (DASNR), Oklahoma State University (OSU) and Oklahoma Panhandle State University (OPSU) establishing the Oklahoma Panhandle Research and Extension Center (OPREC) became effective July 15, 1994.

The Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (DASNR) represents a highly integrated organization.  Academic programs in DASNR are under the purview of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural resources (CASNR).  Research programs from the most basic to the strictly applied are conducted by the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station (OAES).  Technology generated from research programs is transferred to potential users by the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service (OCES).  DASNR programs represent a true partnership among federal, state and local government and with the private sector.

The OAES is charged with the responsibility of developing and conducting a comprehensive program to investigate agricultural problems of the state.  Many problems facing panhandle agriculture are specific to the high plains.  Experiments specific to these problems are necessary to provide solutions and transfer of technological information to clientele in the panhandle area.

Oklahoma Panhandle State University (OPSU) is charged with providing post-secondary higher educational experiences, primarily for students enrolled at OPSU.  OPSU's mission includes academic programs, cultural enrichment, selected professional and technical training, lifelong learning experiences and public service activities.  Within this framework, OPSU owns and operates the university farm as a production unit, providing hands-on laboratory experience opportunities for students and faculty.

OPSU and DASNR have a long history of collaborative efforts, particularly as related to the OAES Panhandle Research Station.  This commitment is intended to facilitate the operation of OPREC for the purpose of providing the latest technology and information to producers in the panhandle area.
