Update on New World Screwworm
In-Service ID: 52886
In-Service Description: You have likely been made aware that the USDA has suspended importation of live cattle, horses, and bison through the southern border due to the spread of the new world screwworm in Central America and southern Mexico. Concerns about the spread of this fly into the U.S. has prompted the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture Food and Forestry (ODAFF) to reach out to OSU Extension to collaborate in providing education on the status of this pest, its biology, and support efforts to collect suspect specimens to monitor for its presence in Oklahoma. This in-service will introduce you to the biology of this fly, the environments where it may be found if it were to reach Oklahoma, and USDA resources regarding the status of the screwworm. We will also provide an overview of the current plan to submit specimen samples to the Plant Disease and Insect Diagnostic Laboratory (PDIDL) through your county extension office.
